Maybe you are like I am…I really appreciate art, good art, you know the kind that actually makes sense, not the kind whereby you have to stand on your head and squint your eyes to even have a clue what the art is about? I must admit that I love to look at good art…especially good art that relates to the outdoors or fly fishing (i.e fly fishing art work). I am a person who can’t even draw a stick figure without it becoming obscene or questionable…but, just recently I came across a young man who is truly gifted, not just a little gifted, but really a special artist and his choice of art…you guessed it, fly fishing!
Nate Karnes is a younger guy that oddly enough I came across by a mutual friend and colleague, Troy Guthrie. Troy is a fellow teacher and educational consultant who just happened to be in my room, helping me and my kids better learn how to use our new set of Chromebooks. It wasn’t long until the conversation turned to the outdoors and fly fishing (probably due to the many photos, etc… that adorn my walls, growing in number over the past quarter century). Troy told me he had a friend who loved to fly fish and did fly fishing art. That certainly got my attention and later that night I took the time to go to Nate’s website. I guess the only word I can use is ‘amazed’.
For a guy who loves, make that…is passionate about fly fishing….like I am, this art was nothing short of a candy shop. I was truly blown away with his abilities and secretly wish that I too, had just an ounce of this talent. I guess the next best thing then is to support those who do and that is what I am doing today. I hope you will take a moment to peruse Nate’s sight and drink in the spectacular work that he has given to us, the fly fishing community. I can tell you that my side window on my Yukon XL sports a sticker done by Nate; a ‘pig of a smallmouth’ (you can see the photo within this piece). I am also in the process of securing a black/white print…actually my wife is securing the print and it will be displayed prominently within our home as my Christmas gift for this year.
Anyway…I hope that you too enjoy this talent and amazing art and if so…can send a little business Nate’s direction. I find that there are those long winter days when all I get to do is tie a few flies…I love to just walk around and look at some photos of warmer days when the fish were jumping and now I will have additional art pieces to turn my thoughts to…to days when once again I will get to make a strip set on a ‘pig of a smallmouth’.

Jacobson Outdoors

Hand Crafted Fly Fishing Signs
My wife, Vickie, is now making signs … of all kinds. I asked her to make a few fly fishing signs; she makes each one of these by hand, from scratch. They are very nice and would make a nice addition to your den, office, hearth or fly-tying area. You can look at these in […]
