Dog Days Of Summer and Big Smallmouth Bass

I won’t say I am ever disappointed to land big smallmouth bass on the fly …. ever! However, I left home on this day with dreams and thoughts of a big musky, very big in fact. I have caught several musky over 40 inches in my fly fishing career and, in fact, landed my best musky ever just last year, a 45 inch beast that will live on in my memory for quite some time; at least until I land anything larger!

These are indeed the ‘dog-days’ of Summer and frankly there isn’t much else I’d rather be doing on one of these warm days than ambling my way down one of the three rivers here within 5 minutes of our cabin. The true beauty of these rivers is that they all have a very nice population of musky and at any time I continue to remind myself that glory is just one cast away …. just one cast away …. etc…. This day, I didn’t find any cooperating musky but there were enough big smallmouth bass to make it a great day of fly fishing.

If you have not tried finding, fishing for or landing a musky on the fly then please do yourself a favor and find or locate an area with these apex predators and give it a go. Here in northern Wisconsin there are anywhere up to ten different water ways and flowages that all produce world class musky fishing.

I hope you enjoy watching me land these three big smallmouth bass and, as always, if you have any questions or comments leave those below or you can reach me at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com.
