Another awesome day on the St Croix River … lots of smallmouth bass and several over 16 inches with the largest coming in a tad over 20 inches. Every once in a while all the stars align as they did on this day and the fish are up and eager to eat one of my own hand tied poppers.
To have the river all to oneself is also a treat and something that I don’t take lightly or for granted! I love just ambling backwards in the black, tannic water … knowing that at any point or on any casts you can hook up with a large smallmouth, pike or even a big musky.
As you will see from the video I spend about 15 minutes probing one deep hole as I land the 20 incher along with another nice smallmouth and a big pike. My river float boat in conjunction with my kick fins makes for a very unique vessel that allows me to lock in and hover in place while casting for big fish that lurk in these spots. This is something you just can’t do by yourself in any other type of boat and so easy and convenient in these mid sized float boats … mine is made by Outcast in case you are interested or looking for something similar and the specific name is the Fish Cat IGS Scout. For a boat that runs under $1000 and is as durable as any on the market, the uniqueness is something truly special and best of all it fits in the back of my pick up truck.
Hope you enjoy this awesome day on the water and remember that if you have any questions you can reach me by leaving a comment below or via email at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com.

Dog Days Of Summer and Big Smallmouth Bass
I won’t say I am ever disappointed to land big smallmouth bass on the fly …. ever! However, I left home on this day with dreams and thoughts of a big musky, very big in fact. I have caught several musky over 40 inches in my fly fishing career and, in fact, landed my best […]

Low Water, Upstream Wind And A 20 Inch Smallmouth Bass
Greetings and welcome back to another fly fishing adventure. Today’s video will give some insight into how to handle low, clear water … in addition to an upstream wind that made navigating my float boat pretty tough. It took me about a half hour to find a pattern that worked and as you will see […]
