Trout On The Upper Namekagon River – Part 1

Greetings and Salutations my friends …. here is hoping that your 2025 is off to a great start. You may be ahead of us here in the winter wonderland of northern Wisconsin … as this was my first outing of the year. Come along with me as I traverse a gorgeous section of the Upper Namekagon River in search of trout.

Before we go too far, I need to say that some days, you are the windshield and some days, you are the bug and on this day the catching was at a minimum, in fact I managed only two brook trout; however the scenery and wildlife was alarmingly beautiful and the tannic waters of the Nam made for a very special day afloat.

My good friend Duane was along and followed me down the river, you might remember Duane from last fall as he ventured out on a fly fishing trip with me on the St. Croix for smallmouth bass … and I might add, did a very good job for his first time both in a float boat and using a fly rod. We did about 4 1/2 miles of the river and along the way saw an amazing list of birds topped by the many ruffed grouse that were busy drumming and drumming up a mate for the spring. The best part was when a good sized weasel came to the waters edge, slipped into the river and swam across without ever knowing that I was even there.

All in all, it was a super day to be out and to be out on the water. Good company along with a special river tends to have that effect. For sure we will be back and once again trying to find a few nice trout on the Namekagon.

If you have questions you can leave those for me below in the comment section or you can send me an email at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com and I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner. See you later this spring for more fly fishing adventures!
