Saturday, May 4th was our fishing opener here in Wisconsin and to be honest, it is a big deal! I traveled south about 15 minutes to a small lake where our DNR stocks trout .… oh, and there are crappie, panfish and bass as well.
Starting out at 5:30am and just a few minutes ahead of sunrise … I pushed off on my float tube, kick fins doing the work and a 4 wt fly rod, sink tip line in hand. A few casts later and a spunky crappie had eaten my creme colored trout candy.
I was in good company as a pair of loons were also working the lake for fish …. and if you haven’t ever had the pleasure of fishing beside a loon, you are truly missing out on one of nature’s great beauties.
I made one full loop around the lake, caught a few crappie, bass and several trout …. and then it began to rain, at 44 degrees and with my legs in the water, it doesn’t take long to get pretty chilly. A quick trip back to the old suburban and full blast on the heater and all was good with the world.
