What I have found…and came to love about fly fishing is a simple truth; not every night out needs to be about catching tons of fish or big lunkers. Maybe that is a sign of maturity…which would surprise some folks in my life…or maybe it is a sign of how much I truly love nature. This short video is just such the case, while small creek fly fishing, as I am able to catch a bunch of rock bass along with a few smallmouth on one of my favorite little creeks not too far from my home.
It is on nights like this that my entire body gets to breathe, take in the beauty of nature and re-charge for another busy day. Along the way there were cardinals, high up in the trees, singing their song of domination. Geese and wood ducks going about their business of raising the next generation. Blue bells lined the valleys and dogwoods shone through calling out with their own neon hello.
I need nights like this; to slow things down, catch a few fish and get back to what we were supposed to be. I hope as you watch you can take in a bit of the beauty; pay special attention to the water, for on this night it had just enough pace to create foam. When combined with the near tannic water below…the contrast was simply special.
As you will see I had to fend off the rock bass and no complaining here as they are a fun little fish…however they aren’t a smallmouth, never will be in my eyes. For a good hour or so all I could do was to hook and land the smaller cousins; but as you will see I finally caught up with a few smallies and that made the journey even sweeter.
I was fishing once again with my trusted Winston 3 weight and a floating line. I love this combo and couldn’t even guess how many fish over the years has fallen to this 8 foot rod. I used two flies; a black leech with some weight and a small, flashy, minnow imitation that I allowed to just ride the current into the pools. I hope you too can find a night and a stream just like this one whereby you can relax and recharge….if you like the video, please give it a like at the end.

A Lazy Day for Smallmouth and Pike On The Fly

The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing
If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a […]
