Some days are just better than others and on this mid July day, fly fishing on the St Croix River, here in Northwest Wisconsin … it all came together in a both beautiful and powerful way. The water was at a near perfect level allowing me enough cover to make cast into various pools and enough flow to allow me to skate over the boulders with my boat.
Amusingly you will also see that I had what I term two accidental catch … the first one was as I had just shut the camera off and was rowing from one side to the other on the river and while trolling my popper my rod almost made it out of the boat! Second was while in the rapids I had caught a nice smallmouth and was admiring it … but had thrown my fly back into the stream and again, my rod began to move out of the boat and a ten inch smallie had passively eaten my fly.
This is indeed an amazing river and I am so lucky to have it just 4 miles from our cabin …. so, hope you can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the river as you watch me pull in a few big smallmouth.
