What a great day out on the St Croix River as my friend Duane and I fly fished about 3-4 miles of the upper portion of the river; and just in case you are curious, there are lots of definitions of ‘upper’ but for me it is above the Riverside Landing where Wisconsin 35 crosses the river. Why, well, just 3 miles upstream the Namekagon River dumps into the St Croix and frankly the river gets pretty big from there on down.
I was able to start the day off by talking through and landing a nice smallie and did so intentionally to try and help those out there new to the sport … and new to smallmouth fishing, do a better job and better understand how to fish a popper. Truly, is there anything much better than having a big, black, smallie come up and smash a popper …. well, maybe because on this trip I was able to land three musky on the same popper and incredibly caught the same fish twice? Crazy for sure and not sure I have ever had that happen at any point in my fly fishing career before.
To say that I love the St Croix is a large understatement … and how in the world could it get much better to have the river in your backyard and be able to fish different sections at about any point or time I wish! The wildlife along the river and its removal and seclusion from the human population just adds to its incredible flavor.
I hope you enjoyed my day on the water and please leave any comments below or you can reach me by emailing me at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com and I will do my best to get back to you in a timely manner with the best answer I have.

The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing
If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a […]
