Incredible Topwater Action For Smallmouth On The Fly

Welcome back to another video and adventure as I wander my way down a few miles of the St Croix River in search of big smallmouth bass using poppers … specifically my pucker lip fly that has done well this season. Click here to see my fly tying video of the pucker lip fly.

The water levels on the St Croix are way down, making for some strategic casting and requiring that you stay as low as possible and be as stealthy as possible while approaching the pools. In the video I am using my 10′, 7wt rod with floating line to make those long casts that are necessary.

The pucker lip fly has worked very well this season and in fact has been my go to fly for both smallmouth and largemouth bass for a few seasons. The size of the fly matches the size of the baitfish here on the St Croix and the sound effects of the popper will send out a come and get it message for several feet away. You will get to see this happen up close and personal. And it makes for some incredible topwater action for smallmouth on the fly.

Here is hoping you are having a great fly fishing season and remember that if you need any help or info you can leave a comment in the section below or you can reach me at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com and I will do my best to get back to you with a good answer.
