Alright …. feels a little odd to say I am now 63! Seems like yesterday I was 36 …. time does indeed fly and it goes even faster when you are having fun and fly fishing one of the great rivers in America, the St Croix River.
My friend Duane and I sat out on a 4-5 mile stretch of the upper river with fly rods in hand looking for big smallmouth and yes, fish were caught … and yes, fish were lost! Fish also took one fly from each of us. Guess it is better to have danced and lost …. or is that loved and lost … than to have never loved at all! I love fly fishing for multi-species like smallies, pike and musky; but losing flies along the way to those toothy critters can be frustrating.
Stay tuned all the way to the end for my story about my fly fishing genesis … from my shop. I feel quite fortunate to have come full circle from a young man in Southern Indiana dreaming of fly fishing the big waters of the St Croix to actually having it in my backyard and getting to do this on a regular basis.
If you haven’t experienced a river like the St Croix you are truly missing out on a special time and one you won’t quickly forget. Remember to get a hold of my friend Elliott Jacobson at Jacobson Outdoors if you would like to book a trip this summer for smallmouth bass or maybe you have always wanted to try and catch a big, toothy musky on the fly …. Elliott can make that happen.
