Fly Fishing The Upper St Croix River for Smallmouth Bass and Pike

Back once again, fly fishing the upper St Croix River with a 7 and 8 weight rod in hand and this time … both outfits have big poppers attached. I brought along an 8 weight outfit and have about 10 inches of metal as my tippet and am actively searching for pike and maybe even a musky!

My 7 weight rod is the 10 footer and I have a 20 pound tippet attached with a size 4 pucker lipped fly … all in search of a big smallmouth bass. Frankly, the river is so shallow right now that I felt like using a streamer rod would end up causing more frustration than it was a benefit.

Truth be told, in today’s adventure the river is as low as I have ever fished it, most spots it was 6 to 8 inches deep and that seemed to cause lots of the big smallmouth to journey to deeper holes in the river … either way, it was a fun day and lots of fish were caught, including a few good pike that gave me some hard times.
