Occasionally life just hits the sweet spot; such was the case on my last afternoon at Bennet Spring State Park. After lunch and little nap I decided to grab my 3 weight and hit the spring for one last hour of daylight. You never really know how things are going to go … but you go anyway!
As I walked into the stream the beauty of the park and the Ozarks was simply staggering. I looked up and down the stream and saw no one else and knew this might just be a special, magical hour. A few casts in and I had landed my first rainbow of the night. The pull and bend on the 3 weight made the retrieve special and as the fish turned sideways, all of the colors of the rainbow literally jumped up from the crystal clear spring water.
I landed a couple of more fish in zone 1 and decided I had about 20 minutes left and would hop over the bridge into zone 2 to finish the night. With a small size 8 trout candy tied on 3X tippet my small 3 weight with sink tip 1 line was ‘perfect’ for the two feet of water. With the sun at my back I began to get hit after hit and caught several nice rainbows in the last 20 minutes.
These are the times one wishes they could just bottle up the entire event; you know … save it for one of ‘those’ days when things aren’t going so well. I quickly thought about all the ‘busy’ people in the world that were hustling and bustling from place to place; ah … what they don’t know!
So, I hope that 2021 treats you to a few of those ‘magical hours’ and you are there and ready to take advantage of it. If you have any questions or comments you can leave those below or email me at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com.

A Lazy Day for Smallmouth and Pike On The Fly
Another day on the upper St Croix River and another great adventure for my good friend Duane and myself. The air was cool and there was some rain in and around us … barometer was falling and the fish were biting, especially a few big pike and smallmouth bass. What a complete treasure to have […]
Up Close and Personal: One Of My Best Smallmouth Days Ever!
Another awesome day on the St Croix River … lots of smallmouth bass and several over 16 inches with the largest coming in a tad over 20 inches. Every once in a while all the stars align as they did on this day and the fish are up and eager to eat one of my […]
The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing
If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a […]
