Hey folks …. welcome back to another video here on FlyFishingWithJeff.com. On this video I am float tubing a small lake near my home for bass and some big bluegill …. and the fish were hungry! What a night, as the weather was near perfect and there was lots of wildlife on this gorgeous lake.
On this trip, I’m adding a little excitement by using my 2 and 3 weight rods. If you are wondering why I would choose to use the 2 and 3 weight fly rods … well a quick review, the smaller the number the smaller the rod, smaller line, etc… so, by using the smaller rods, the 2 and 3 weight, you can make the smaller fish actually feel like bigger/larger fish! That might sound odd, but I can guarantee that a 10 inch bluegill on a 2 weight rod is a true thrill and one of the purest ways to catch these big panfish.
Truth is that you and many others, may not own a 2 or 3 weight rod … or maybe haven’t even ever seen one of the smaller rods. So, should you run out and buy a smaller rod, no, well maybe …. sure, oh heck there are lots of reasons to own one but buying one just to say you own a smaller rod is not a reason. Bottom line they are lots of fun and if you know what you are doing and take your time, you can land some big fish.
I told this story before, but about 10 years ago while fishing at Bennet in Missouri during catch and release, I caught and landed a 21 inch rainbow (in current) on my 2 weight. The water was cold and there were hardly any other fishermen around …. so, taking a long time to land a fish on a smaller rod might not be the best idea in hot weather or when you are fishing elbow to elbow (I would ask why you are elbow to elbow?).
A few possible drawbacks on the smaller rods? First, your casting has to be a little, or maybe a lot, better. Second, the smaller rods are hard on your shoulder, arm, etc…. and finally, landing big or aggressive fish might just be too much for the little rods. If, however, you have a pond, or small stream nearby and would like to add a 2 or 3 weight to your arsenal …. then by all means, go for it, I think you will find that at the right time and place, it is a great tool and so very much fun!

The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing
If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a […]
