Minnesota Pheasant Hunting

Well my fly fishing season is over and here in the north woods of Wisconsin my focus has once again turned to upland hunting; grouse, woodcock, fall turkey and in this video …. pheasants. Come along with me as I harvest a few roosters behind two of my wirehairs, “Holly” and “Aldo”.

I also have my sons new wirehair pup “Veila” along …. she is 6 months old and extremely promising. It is always fun working and training a new pup and the future sure looks bright as this pup is truly special. I love fly fishing and always will but I also have to say that working a good pointing dog in chest deep grass might just be my very favorite thing in the world! I started with my first bird dog, a short-hair, way back in 1983 and 40 some birds dogs later I still feel like a little kid when following one around waiting for the next point. As for birds, I love grouse and woodcock … but nothing can compare with the flash and glory of a rooster pheasant cackling up through the copper colored grass into a blue sky! If you have experienced this rush then you understand and if not you should try and make this happen at least once in your life.

It is also a special time when you can share it with a good friend and through the years I have had the genuine honor of pheasant hunting with some incredible men. Duane has became a very good friend and we have fly fished together, turkey hunted together and now pheasant hunted together. He and his short-hair “Izzy” make a great duo and it is a pleasure to watch them work together in pursuit of upland game.

If you watch the video and find yourself interested in bird hunting or specifically pheasant hunting … Pheasants Forever is a truly great organization that has helped the American landscape immensely for over 40 years in restoring cover so that birds and wildlife of all types and species can thrive and survive in cover that allows them to flourish. Give the organization a look see and you can also ask me questions via my email at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com.
