Welcome to another fly fishing adventure as today I do about 4-5 miles of the upper St Croix river here in northwest Wisconsin on a beautiful 70 degree day. The barometric pressure was down a bit and the smallmouth bass were up and chasing from the get go.
To say it was a peaceful day is a grand understatement. To have the river all to oneself and do so on a perfect weather day is quite the treat! There was just enough of a flow to the river that I didn’t have to go to my kick fins more than a couple of times; when the river pulls you along at the correct pace you can really hit the cover and find the fish.
As you will see I land a few nice smallmouth bass; the largest was just a tad shy of 20 inches and if I can count it as a 20 incher … that would make my 6th smallie of over 20 inches this season. For a river smallmouth 20 inches is the level that I typically use to quantify the fish as a true trophy. In fact through the past 6 years that I have been living and fly fishing up here in the Northwoods …. I have landed well over 20 trophy size smallmouth with the largest being a bit over 22 inches.
I hope you enjoy the gorgeous scenery and can take in part of the beauty that we enjoy here up North. If you have any questions or comments please leave those below or you can contact me via email at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com and I will do my best to get back to you with a good response.
