In today’s video adventure I am once again back on the upper St Croix River with my good buddy, Duane. We do 3-4 miles of clear and low river water in search of big smallmouth and luckily along the way … we find a few!
On this day it was a trifecta of issues; low and clear water, winds that were blowing upstream at a high clip and plenty of weeds that were clogging up the river. To overcome these issues you have to be creative and think a bit outside the box as well as always trying to keep your profile at a minimum.
The real payoff is when you land a big smallmouth in clear, low water and even more explosive is when it happens via a big popper. I hope you can glean a few low water fly fishing tactics that might just help you out the next time you are faced with any or all of these precarious conditions.

Poppers, Peace and a Bunch Of Nice Smallmouth
Welcome to another fly fishing adventure as today I do about 4-5 miles of the upper St Croix river here in northwest Wisconsin on a beautiful 70 degree day. The barometric pressure was down a bit and the smallmouth bass were up and chasing from the get go. To say it was a peaceful day […]
DR. SLICK To the Rescue
Just last week I was once again out on one of my local rivers when I hooked a small pike; if you have ever dealt with pike or any toothy creature then you know and can understand how important it is to have a utensil to safely remove the hook and to not get ‘hooked’ […]
Dog Days Of Summer and Big Smallmouth Bass
I won’t say I am ever disappointed to land big smallmouth bass on the fly …. ever! However, I left home on this day with dreams and thoughts of a big musky, very big in fact. I have caught several musky over 40 inches in my fly fishing career and, in fact, landed my best […]
