Fly Fishing the Genesis of the St Croix River for Big Bronzebacks

The water continues to drop here in NW Wisconsin and thus I have extended my search for viable water. On this video adventure, I fly fish a new section of the genesis of the St. Croix River. The smallmouth bass are up and aggressive from beginning to the very last casts. Come along with me and take in some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.

I have tied a new fly, let’s say a new size fly as I went small, down to a size 4 reversed tied buck tail in tan, olive and brown. The fly was just light enough to see in the water at some distance … which helped me set the hook on a number of very nice smallmouth.

I went back to my sink tip 1 fly line and used 20 pound fluorocarbon as tippet (mostly in case of pesky pike … although I didn’t land a single pike on the trip). My 7 weight bankrobber rod allowed me to make long casts into tight spots where the smallmouth were lurking.
