I am back again on the upper St. Croix. The water has continued to drop and the fishing conditions are about as tough as can be due to low and clear water … I make the move to a floating line and my ten foot rod to make long casts into pools.
I have a reversed tied buck tail fly and it is indeed the magic bullet as I land a few nice smallmouth on some very exciting explosions. The long rod allows me to make the long casts and keep my profile to a minimum as the water is not only low but very clear. All of this together makes for some exciting explosions as the smallmouth treat my streamer more like a top water presentation. A great result fishing low water conditions for smallmouth.
The scenery here on the upper St. Croix is nothing short of amazing as well. If you have the opportunity to fish up here in NW Wisconsin … please don’t pass it up. If you have any questions you can send those to me via the comment section at the bottom of this page or by emailing me at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com.
