If you have been following along then you know that by now, Vickie and I are stationed in NW Wisconsin; just a few miles west of Minong, Wisconsin … and just a few miles from the St. Croix, Namekagon and Totagatic Rivers. It has been an interesting past three weeks as we pulled into our new piece of property on a Tuesday morning and literally had to cut out way in/on to the property the first night. We weren’t completely sure of what we would find; would the electric, water and septic all work? The good news is that all three are now up and running which means we can live a civilized life (momma gets her coffee and I get a shower).
Wisconsin Land – Before
Wisconsin Land – After
If you haven’t yet been to this part of the world, what on the earth are you waiting for? The temperatures are usually in the 70’s with an occasional spike in the mid 80’s (and yet the humidity is usually low). We are just an hour or less from Duluth/Superior; known as the ‘twin ports’. Anything you could want is found here … along with the most awesome Lake Superior. You don’t have to go that far for services as Minong and Danbury are two of the small towns within 20 minutes and they offer a variety of services…in fact if you like beef jerky, Jack Link’s Beef Jerky is made in Minong and you can pick up a wide variety at Henson’s store in Minong. We love the place, in fact love might be mild as it is one of the most beautiful areas I have ever visited. To be able to drive just 4 miles down the road (most of it fire trail) and drop into the St. Croix is just something I never quite imagined. Less than a ¼ mile from the property is the Namekagon Barrens Wildlife Area. This is an interested piece of property, about 7,000 acres of a very specific type of ecosystem made up of scrub oak and jack pine…interspersed with area of grasses and wildflowers. The most interesting part of the Barrens is the fact that there is a thriving population of sharptailed grouse! Yes, I said, sharpies in Wisconsin. On two mornings … while on my walk I have flushed 9 on one occasion and 12 on another.
The video, below, is my latest … fly fishing the Upper St. Croix in Mid August. Some great scenery, fishing and info on my new guide service.
Guide Service:
As I mention in the video, I will be offering a guide service; starting in September (2020). Low Water Fly Fishing Tactics for Smallmouth
In today’s video adventure I am once again back on the upper St Croix River with my good buddy, Duane. We do 3-4 miles of clear and low river water in search of big smallmouth and luckily along the way … we find a few! On this day it was a trifecta of issues; low […]
A Lazy Day for Smallmouth and Pike On The Fly
Another day on the upper St Croix River and another great adventure for my good friend Duane and myself. The air was cool and there was some rain in and around us … barometer was falling and the fish were biting, especially a few big pike and smallmouth bass. What a complete treasure to have […]
Up Close and Personal: One Of My Best Smallmouth Days Ever!
Another awesome day on the St Croix River … lots of smallmouth bass and several over 16 inches with the largest coming in a tad over 20 inches. Every once in a while all the stars align as they did on this day and the fish are up and eager to eat one of my […]
The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing
If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a […]
