I’m not sure about you but one of my very favorite things is to fly fish new water. Recently, in a very round-a-bout way I came across an opportunity to try out some new water. Once school was over I loaded up the truck and off I went.
New water is like a big puzzle for me…a big puzzle with the potential for big fish! Through the years some of the biggest fish I have caught has come the first time I have fly fished a certain water. On this night I would pack my small tube a hundred feet or so to a 4 or 5 acre lake…that I would soon find was full of nice bass, blue-gill and crappie.
I decided to use my 6-weight system with a type 1 sink tip line along with a BP special. The BP in this case are the initials of one of my friends who is an avid and accomplished fly fisherman and fly tier….Bill Pacey. Bill lives in Memphis and is best of friends with my longtime friend, Frank Terkhorn; these two old-timers get together a few times each year to fly fish and shoot the bull.
As you can see from the video the action was fast and furious…as I caught and landed about 50 fish in a couple of hours. It was one of those nights when the fish, the weather and water clarity all came together, resulting in a fun-filled couple of hours.
You might notice that I had my Humminbird fish finder along (you can see it in part of the video). I don’t necessarily use it to find fish…but I do like to see what is on the bottom, what the water temps are and most important…how deep is the water I am fishing. If you are a serious float-tuber then an investment in one of these small and portable gems would be wise.
While I didn’t land any giants…I did land a few nice specimens of bass, bluegill and crappie. The lake in this case was just a few minutes from my home and that is special as well; always nice to get to fish and still be home for supper.
