Winter Catch and Release at Bennett Spring

The video you are about to watch was filmed on Black Friday in November of 2014 at Bennett Spring in Missouri during Catch and Release season. I tried to give some good info on where to stay and some techniques that work well during catch and release … hope this helps and you can make it out to Missouri for a great fly fishing trip.

Low Water Fly Fishing Tactics for Smallmouth

In today’s video adventure I am once again back on the upper St Croix River with my good buddy, Duane. We do 3-4 miles of clear and low river water in search of big smallmouth and luckily along the way … we find a few! On this day it was a trifecta of issues; low […]

A Lazy Day for Smallmouth and Pike On The Fly

Another day on the upper St Croix River and another great adventure for my good friend Duane and myself. The air was cool and there was some rain in and around us … barometer was falling and the fish were biting, especially a few big pike and smallmouth bass. What a complete treasure to have […]

Up Close and Personal: One Of My Best Smallmouth Days Ever!

Another awesome day on the St Croix River … lots of smallmouth bass and several over 16 inches with the largest coming in a tad over 20 inches. Every once in a while all the stars align as they did on this day and the fish are up and eager to eat one of my […]

The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing

If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a […]

I like to fish at Bennett Springs and Montauk in Missouri. What type and color fly line would you use?

    Hey Brian,
That’s a tough question because it depends on how you’re going to fish. Most folks will nymph while at either place…and if so, floating line with a fairly long leader of 4X is the ticket. I’m a streamer guy and thus use sinking line. I used to switch between various full sinking lines but as of a couple years ago I’ve went to Rio’s sink tip line….the last ten foot or so is clear and sinks at about 1 1/2 to 2 inches per second. I then use a shorter leader/tippet of 3X….probably 3-4 feet. I vary how deep I get my streamers by tying a little or a lot of weight on the fly.. I love this line and have one in all weights from 3-8, so if interested in streamers…check out the Rio line. Fact is I occasionally will nymph with this same line…I just don’t use an indicator and keep a tight line, this works very well with a crackle back. Hope this helps….color…..not a deal at all unless you’re dry fly fishing then stay with a more neutral color.

    Jeff
