The Highs and Lows of Fly Fishing

If you have watched any of my videos then you probably have seen the bible verse at the end slide of each video, Gal 6:9. There are a few versions but the one I stuck on as a kid is as follows: Let us not get tired in doing what is right, for after a while we will reap a harvest of blessings … if we don’t get tired and give up! What a great motto for life and frankly, a great motto for fly fishing for as I have said numerous times, that next big fish is just one cast away.

On our most recent fly fishing adventure, Duane and I had a pretty incredible day as we both caught and landed 15-20 smallmouth bass with a few of them being in the 15-18 inch range. The weather was perfect and our scenery was the St Croix River with all of its majesty.
Duane - Fly Fishing from Float Tube
As things tend to go, we were just fishing along, side by side, when Duane made a cast that caught a limb about 12 foot up in a soft maple tree. I didn’t know it but the next few minutes would unfold as about the funniest time I have had on the water.

Duane decided he wasn’t going to lose the fly, a popper that I had tied for him and one that had caught many fish that morning. He proceeded to climb aboard his blue boat, the same boat that was floating on water. When I saw this I was immediately impressed and thought to myself, I haven’t ever done that before … and in a matter of seconds I found out why. The boat went one way and Duane flipped gallantly the other way and the rest as they say … is history

As I said in the video, kudos to Duane for handling this well and not having any issues; truth is that is just the way he is wired. As you have already seen or will see …. it was a moment in which I lost control and belly laughed for several minutes.

I am sure that it is good for one to laugh and to be able to do so with a good friend is even better. What a great thing to be able to have a friend like Duane that you can share the ‘highs and lows’ of both fly fishing … and life!
