Poppers for Trophy Smallmouth Bass in May and On the Fly

Once again my good friend Duane and I set out on an adventure on the St Croix River in pursuit of smallmouth bass. On this day mother nature had turned a cold shoulder with 44 degree temps and winds blowing straight from Canada at 20-25 mph … making for some pretty nippy fly fishing.

Before we even made the bridge, not 100 yards from out put in point, Duane had already caught two nice smallies on one of my pucker-lipped flies … quite an incredible start. It would take me another 30 minutes to hook up with my first fish but once it had begun it was fast and furious from that point forward.

Using my 10 foot 7 weight rod with floating line and a pucker-lipped fly the next couple of hours was nothing short of incredible as I landed two-17″ smallies and several more in the 15-16″ range.

Just when I thought the day had been amazing I was lucky enough to tango with a true trophy … a 21 inch, black and very buff smallmouth bass. What a joy and privilege to find one of the rivers 20 inchers and do so in the month of May.
