Early Season Bass On The Fly

Welcome back to 2024 and Fly Fishing with Jeff! We had a mild winter here in northern Wisconsin and compared to last year it was a breeze! The most snow we had came in mid March and was gone in under 10 days. The coldest temps we had was back in January and we only dropped into the negative 20’s … and for only about a week.

In today’s video I am about a mile from my cabin and once again on my float tube, fly rod in hand, hoping for some early season bass. Frankly, I didn’t know exactly what to expect as I had been out two times before and had only managed one bass each time out. Knowing our temps had been up and it had stayed above freezing for a couple days, I hoped that the fish would indeed be up and looking for a fly!

In the video I have a 3 and 4 weight outfit; the 4 weight is a sink tip 1 fly line and the 3 weight is floating line. Not knowing where the fish will be in the water column is always a tricky one … as you can see it didn’t take long to hook a few fish and to see that they were up and following the fly in 3-4 foot of water. Either way, what a nice day and a great time to be out and on the water.

As always, if you have questions you can contact me by leaving a comment below or by emailing me at flyfishingwithjeff@gmail.com. I look forward to bringing you more fly fishing videos in the next few months. BTW, there is a new section starting in this video …. from the front porch; I hope to have a few conversations on various topics and not necessarily fly fishing. So, stay through to the end of the video as I discuss my favorite scripture, Gal 6:9. I hope this discussion inspires you and makes your day a little better.
